Recovery on Water
Recovery on Water (ROW) is a rowing team that gives breast cancer patients and survivors the unique opportunity to interact, become active in their recovery, and gain support from their peers. Marybeth was a member of one of the first ROW teams. She cherished the relationships she made with her ROWmates.
Metta is a Buddhist term meaning loving kindness for all living creatures. Metta Calana supports efforts by local people to meet the needs of women and children from Burma who are disadvantaged. Metta Calana works with local community-based organizations in Mae Sot Thailand and foster efforts to reduce the unacceptably high maternal and child mortality rates in Burma. Metta Calana's President, Dr. Terry Smith, is a lifelong friend of the Pierce family.
Lou Malnati's Cancer Research Foundation
In 1971, Lou and Jean Malnati closed up shop at their first restaurant in Lincolnwood to host a one-night charity event to raise a scholarship fund for a local athlete that would play football at Wake Forest University in the name of famous Chicago Bear Brian Piccolo, who passed away from cancer. After Lou also fell victim to cancer in 1978, Jean and the Malnati family built on this one-night charity event by dedicating themselves to funding cancer research and treatment programs through the Lou Malnati Cancer Research Foundation.
Catholic Legal Immigration Network
The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., has been on the cutting edge of training nonprofit immigration legal service providers to provide affordable, quality legal representation to immigrants since its founding in 1988. The network includes faith-based institutions, farmworker programs, domestic violence shelters, ethnic community-focused organizations, libraries and other entities that serve immigrants.
